NB: Criteria E and F will need to be completed in tandem. Criterion F aspect/strand (iii), the scale and volume of production, will affect the modelling in Criterion E aspect/strand (i), modification of the design prototype for commercial production, for example if the scale of production is mass/volume then most likely injection moulding could be the mode of production and plastic the material – therefore the design/prototype will need to be changed to include draft angles for the mould.
E (i) Develops the design, addressing the required modifications for a commercially viable production process.
- Identify a scale of production for your product based a potential market .
- See Criterion F aspect/strand (iii).
- State it and refer it to Criterion F.
- Identify a type of commercial manufacturing/production method from a range of possibilities that could be viable for the chosen scale of production and match with the appropriate material
- See Criterion F aspect/strand (i & ii).
- State it and refer it to Criterion F.
- Drawings/modelling of ideas annotated to show the required modifications.
- Develop your prototype incrementally by modelling and testing, through sketches, CAD, photographs, or physical modelling.
- This may include a few revised specifications.
- This is similar to aspect/strand from Criterion B (i) and (ii).
- Annotations highlighting additional research and/or feedback enabling iterative development.
- You may need to consider:
- Changing wall thickness, reducing the number of components, (to) reduce unit cost of manufacture.
- Assemblies, sub-assemblies,
- How to create the same component, repeatedly, a number of times – leading to jigs, templates, moulds, etc.
- Consider strategies such as DfM, DfMaterials, DfAssembly/disassembly, etc.
- Adjusting the design/prototype such as draft angles for moulding (injection of others), CNC machining (lathe, router, milling etc), flat pack, modifying assembly, some redesign to accommodate components, interior of a product to accommodate electronics, etc.
- Include any additional research you may have collected.
Other aspects to consider …
- Annotations must be legible.
- Students must not include any extended writing to address this strand.
- The evidence for achievement against this strand should be presented in approximately five A4 pages or the equivalent.
- A presentation drawing of the commercial product.
- A complete set rendered 3D/CAD model.
- Include annotations.
- Annotation of the presentation drawing of the selected design highlighting the key modifications required for commercial production.
- Annotations should include what you changed from the prototype.
- This is similar to Criterion B, aspect/strand (iii).
Other aspects to consider …
- Annotations must be legible.
- Students must not include any extended writing to address this strand.
- The evidence for achievement against this strand should be presented in approximately one A4 page or the equivalent.
E (iii) Develops an accurate design proposal of the commercial product in sufficient detail for a third party to manufacture the product.
The commercial product must be presented in sufficient detail for a third party to be able to interpret correctly.
- Appropriate technical drawings with sufficient detail for commercial manufacture.
- This includes a set (if appropriate) of, orthogonal, isometric, assembly and/or section drawings.
- Include dimensions and any other information/instructions so it can be produced by a third party.
- An assembly drawing.
- This includes (if appropriate), assembly, exploded isometric and section drawings.
- Label/number all components.
- Include dimensions and any other information/instructions so it can be produced by a third party.
- A bill of materials.
- Include details such as part number, part name, sizes, materials, components, quantity, production method, finish, costings, etc.
- In a table format.
Other aspects to consider …
- Students must not include any extended writing to address this strand.
- The evidence for achievement against this strand should be presented in approximately nine A4 pages or the equivalent.
