  • Suspension Bridges

Bridges are the result of our need to transport goods and people easily from one side of an obstacle to another. As a consequence of human ingenuity, the suspension bridge was developed. These bridges consist of some basic parts, the two supports on either side, the cables, and the bridge. Suspension bridges offer a different way of building a bridge and with it comes some advantages and disadvantages. In contrast to normal bridges which hold most of the weight of the  bridge and its load on the pillars and columns under it,  suspension bridges bear most of the load on the wires and support structures on opposite sides of the bridge. The load on these bridges is transformed into a tension in the wires of the bridge, which hold up the main bridge section.

An advantage of these structures is their ability to be much taller than most other bridges, which allows them to be build over bays and large rivers while still allowing boats to pass under them. However, since such areas also have strong winds, this could be detrimental to the bridge. Suspension bridges are infamous for their flexibility and fragility when subjected to high speed winds. An example of this would be the Tacoma Narrows bridge, which bent and and shook during a particularly windy day which eventually caused it to fall. Heavy loads can also cause it to buckle and bend which is obviously a limitation of the design. Suspension bridges also require an extra strong foundation to build, which can greatly increase the cost of building one.

Ultimately,  suspension bridges provide an alternative way of bridging gaps and crossing obstacles and a good addition to the world of structures.

  • Planned Obsolescence of Video Games and Their Consoles

Nowadays, the video game market is extremely competitive and companies are desperately trying to make as much money off of one game, in the shortest amount of time. This has led to post-launch support for their products at small prices called Downloadable Content (DLC). The thing that this has lead to is companies like Rockstar Games (creators of Grand Theft Auto) ask their developers to plan out how long they will allow the content on the disk to ‘live’ and when they will release their first piece of DLC.

One of the ways they get people to buy this new content is by offering a fresh way to play the game and separating those who buy it from those who don’t; creating a constant pull for those who don’t buy it to join their friends

This same thing applies to the video game consoles on which we play these games. Companies like Sony and Microsoft plan out at what time their support for their current console would become less profitable than releasing a new console all together. They must also take into consideration when their competitors are planning to release their next generation of consoles so as to avoid being left behind. For example, many people believe that because of the PS3’s late release compares to the Xbox 360, it has had consistently less sales than the Xbox (and Wii).

The video game industry has been speeding up recently, with people on both sides of the spectrum; those who don’t buy games unless there is post-launch content (free or otherwise) and those who hate the direction in which games are going.  This is because they feel that they are being denied access to content that they felt that was included on game discs before.

  • Tempur-Pedic Mattresses

The Tempur-Pedic mattress series is the definition of ergonomic design. Beds and mattresses that are normally used can cause problems for people with back problems. For one, they don’t provide proper support for the spinal column, only noticeably so for people with back pains and injuries. This is where Tempur-Pedic kicks in. The mattress is made to fit around the body of who ever lies in it. They come in different levels of deformation, each to fit different back conditions and comfort for the user. One feature which is essential to the goal of the company is a high level of customization. Because it strives to help individual people (not the majority of the population) they try and make it so that the product can be made around the individuals preferences; and this is a key feature for any ergonomic product

  • Light Bending Materials

A soldier sneaks up to an enemy camp, completely unseen. It isn’t the dark, or his oppositions’ bad eye-sight that conceals him, it his is innovative camouflage.

It has been a dream of sci-fi writers and military leaders alike to be able to have invisible soldiers  to gain that advantage ontheir foes.  Now scientists at the California Institute of Technology have developed a smart material that does just that. The way it works is that as light hits this new material, negative index
metamaterial (NIM) ,it doesn’t just bounce back as it usually does in materials. Instead light passes through this in adjustable way. While this is not a new idea or a completely new technology, the way they get the light to bend is a little more innovative and effective; as it works specially well in the sun. The new thing that makes this material so much more interesting is the fact that it is tunable in the sense that you can change how drastic the change is.  It also has light harvesting capabilities since it absorbs light at a large variety of angles and it is easy to move around and to make

Negative Index Metamaterials could have multiple applications however; not just ones for the military. For example, it could be used as an effective cover for cars of things in a yard to avoid ugly covers while making it blend in a little more naturally into your environment. Since what it shows is constantly changing, they could be  used as a dynamic fabric for clothing.  Since it absorbs a lot of solar energy, scientist are also talking about it’s uses in clothing or other places for collecting sunlight as a form of energy.
